In 1961 I flew by a Douglas DC-8, which was that time very luxury, to Keflavik (Iceland), Anchorage (Alaska) where we could get out of the plane a short time, over the North Pole and Tokyo to previous Dutch New Guinea.
Back we went by a DC-7 via Bangkok, where we stopped for a couple of hours, to Beirut (Lebanon) to Amsterdam.
