Santika Victims

I reside in Singapore. 2 years ago me and my girlfriend were badly injured in the Santika Club Fire. While the news was making headlines, there were many talks of investigation, assistance and justice. As my girlfriend was fighting for survival, myself badly burnt, there was not much thought of taking actions against the Club owners. I'm also skeptical about the cost of litigation versus the compensation received. One option given was to filed with the Ministry of Justice and they will take action on behalf of the victims, which is what we did.

About two weeks ago, i received a letter via my Embassy. It was totally in Thai (I wonder why?). I emailed a scanned copy for a friend of mine in Bangkok to interpret. Basically it states that we are not entitled to any claims for compensation, and that we have 30 days to file an appeal to the Rights and Liberties Protection Department in Thailand. Now the letter i received in written totally in Thai language. The Rights and Liberties website is totally in Thai language. How do i make an appeal?

Basically i don't expect to get much compensation from the government or the club owners. I'm not even sure if they are being punished for the crime they commit. But not being entitled any compensation at all? That is like saying our life are not being affected by the incident. Nothing could be further from the truth. Are we not victims? I lost 2 good friends to the fire! We were warded in Bangkok Hospital for 1.5 months! Our combined medical bill for the 1.5 months stay is almost S$800,000! After which my girlfriend was transported via Medivac back to Singapore where she was warded for another 5 months! She is still undergoing corrective surgery! Now not being entitled to any compensation? What Rights or Justice are we talking about?

I managed to call the Rights and Liberties Protection Department and later emailed them for help in making an appeal. They promised a reply. Still no reply after two weeks. I called again today and was told the person that is suppose to read my email had taken leave. I asked about the 30 days deadline to make an appeal, no solution. I was told to wait for reply. Compared to then, watching the media highlights on the hospital bed where the fight for justice seems to be on everyone's mouth to look good. Where are we now?
